Big Green Day and Climate Change Mural
More than 150 local children took part in a Big Green Day at Nettlecombe Court recently to celebrate the end of the Heritage Ambassadors Project when a new commemorative mural was also on display.
Children from Old Cleeve School showed the green way forward by walking from their school to Nettlecombe Court where they and the other youngsters enjoyed a variety of experimental environmental games and looking at how the county’s wildlife will be affected by climate change. Somerset Waste Action Programme ran a ‘Solar Energy Challenge’ in which the children made solar-powered boats from recycling packaging and a solar panel.
To commemorate the end of the Heritage Ambassadors project, artist Leo Davey unveiled his colourful, 12m long mural 12m that will grace the wall of Taunton YMCA.
Simon Hewett-Avison was the out-reach project officer for the Heritage Ambassadors project which was funded by the Heritage Lottery. The project was managed as a partnership between Exmoor National Park Authority, Quantocks AONB, Somerset Wildlife Trust and the Field Studies Council at Nettlecombe Court aimed at young people (13-20) who would not normally have the opportunity to explore and enjoy the rich natural habitat on their doorstep.
Mr Hewett-Avison said: “The Project has been a great success and we hope to continue to work with the youngsters who have become Heritage Ambassadors
